AI is changing how sales teams work, but does that mean the fundamentals of good selling have changed too?
In this episode of 3 Questions from The Art & Science of Complex Sales, Paul Fuller sits down with Dave Kurlan to get his perspective on three questions facing sales teams today.
They explore where AI actually adds value in sales, the sales tool Dave says he could not work without, and the timeless sales fundamentals he believes still matter.
Dave sees AI as an effectiveness and efficiency tool, particularly for research.
It can help salespeople quickly research a prospect, uncover relevant context, and prepare for an upcoming conversation. But using AI as a substitute for the salesperson, particularly for writing emails and LinkedIn messages, misses where Dave believes its real value lies.
For Dave, some sales fundamentals simply do not go away.
Salespeople still need to prospect, follow a defined sales process, and resist the temptation to simply wing it. Strong performance comes from practicing and reinforcing those fundamentals consistently.
Dave argues that transactional sales conversations will no longer be enough to differentiate sellers from their competition.
Instead, salespeople need to take a consultative approach and continue practicing the fundamentals behind effective selling. Just like professional athletes repeatedly practice the basics, salespeople need to practice prospecting, follow their sales process, and role-play their consultative approach.
Listen to the full conversation with Dave Kurlan to learn where AI can genuinely support sales, why sales process still matters, and which fundamentals salespeople need to keep practicing.
