Driving Sales Performance with Mindset and Behavior with Dave Brock

In this episode of The Art and Science of Complex Sales, our guest Dave Brock returns to explore what really separates consistently high-performing salespeople and teams from everyone else.

Sales organizations invest heavily in processes, training, technology, coaching, CRM, and now AI. But two people can work inside the same organization with exactly the same tools and support and still perform very differently.

Dave argues that the missing piece is the connection between those sales mechanisms and the mindsets and behaviors required to make them work.

Drawing from his latest book, The DNA of Sales Excellence, he explains why sales performance improves when organizations stop treating tools, processes, and people as separate initiatives and start connecting them as one system.

The Missing Piece in Sales Excellence (03:40)

Sales organizations spend a lot of time optimizing what Dave calls the “mechanisms” of selling: sales processes, methodologies, training, metrics, CRM, coaching, organizational structures, and technology. All of those things matter. But they are only one side of the equation.Dave asks a simple question: if two salespeople have the same manager, training, tools, processes, and support, why does one consistently outperform the other? The difference often comes down to the underlying mindsets and behaviors they bring to those mechanisms.Dave uses DNA as a metaphor. One strand represents the mechanisms. The other represents mindsets and behaviors. The real power comes from the connections between them.

Tools Only Work When the Right Behaviors Support Them (12:44)

CRM provides a clear example.Organizations often respond to poor CRM adoption by giving people more training or enforcing compliance. But knowing how to use a CRM does not automatically make someone want to use it effectively.Dave argues that discipline and accountability are two of the behaviors that make CRM valuable. Salespeople also need to understand why using the system helps them do their job better. The same principle applies across sales. Different mechanisms require different supporting behaviors. Deal strategy might depend heavily on curiosity and customer centricity. Change management may demand discipline and the ability to navigate complexity.Instead of treating behaviors as something separate from the sales system, leaders need to deliberately connect them to the work they expect people to perform.

AI Amplifies the Thinking You Bring to It (23:02)

The conversation turns to AI and why some salespeople get far more value from it than others.Dave explains that the strongest AI users tend to approach it with curiosity. They do not simply ask it for answers. They use it to explore possibilities, challenge assumptions, debate ideas, and improve their thinking. That leads to one of Dave’s most important observations: AI is an amplifier.Used by someone who thinks deeply, it can amplify great thinking. But when the underlying thinking is weak, AI can amplify that too.The opportunity for sales leaders is therefore not simply to introduce more technology. It is to develop the mindsets and behaviors that allow people to use those technologies effectively.Sales excellence comes from connecting the two.Listen to the full conversation with Dave Brock to learn how to connect sales processes, technology, and training with the mindsets and behaviors that turn them into consistent performance.
