Setting up the Membrain MCP Connector

Connect your AI tool of choice (Claude, ChatGPT, etc.) to Membrain and bring your Membrain data and workflows into your AI conversations. 

Once connected, you can use your AI tool to:

• Get answers from your Membrain data without manually searching through records.
• Analyze sales data and surface insights from your pipeline and accounts.
• Ask questions about deals, customers, and sales activity using natural language.
• Work with Membrain data alongside other information in your AI workflow.

Before you start

You’ll need:

• Access to Membrains Insight Engine
• The appropriate MCP permissions for your Membrain user
• Access to your My Settings page
• An AI tool that supports custom MCP connectors, such as ChatGPT or Claude

Set up the MCP connector

1. Make sure you have the Insight Engine

MCP requires the Insight Engine.

If you’re not sure whether Insight Engine is enabled for your Membrain account, contact your Membrain administrator.

2. Get the right MCP permissions

Your Membrain administrator needs to grant you the appropriate MCP permissions at the relevant levels.

These permissions determine what the MCP connection can access and do in Membrain.

Because MCP accesses Membrain as your user, it uses the permissions you already have in Membrain. In other words, connecting an AI tool doesn’t give you access to anything you couldn’t access in Membrain itself.

3. Get your MCP link and authentication token

This is the part that’s easy to miss: MCP settings are under My Settings, not System Setup.

In Membrain:

1. Go to My Settings.
2. Open Integrations.
3. Copy your MCP Links.
4. If your AI tool requires it, also copy the relevant Authentication Token.

Your MCP link and token are user-specific because the MCP connection accesses Membrain as you.

Keep your authentication token secure. Treat it like a credential and don't share it with other users.

4. Add the connector to your AI tool

Open the AI tool you want to connect, such as ChatGPT or Claude.

Add a new custom MCP Connector and provide the MCP information you copied from Membrain.

The exact steps for adding a custom connector vary depending on the AI tool you're using. Follow that tool's instructions for configuring an MCP connection.

How permissions work

Your administrator determines what you can do through MCP by configuring your MCP Permissions.

There are two permission settings:

• Read Access — allows you to access information from Membrain through MCP.
• Write Access — allows you to make changes in Membrain through MCP.

Your administrator will determine which permissions are appropriate for your role.

The MCP connection acts as you. So, for example, if your Membrain user can only access certain information or perform certain actions, the MCP connection is subject to those same permissions.

In short

The setup is a four-step process:

1. Have Insight Engine
2. Get the appropriate MCP permissions
3. Copy your MCP link and, where required, authentication token from My Settings → Integrations
4. Add a custom MCP Connector in your AI tool

Once connected, your AI tool accesses Membrain using your own Membrain identity and permissions.
