Setting up Membrain's MCP Connector

Connect your AI tool of choice (Claude, ChatGPT, etc.) to Membrain and bring your Membrain data and workflows into your AI conversations.

Once connected, you can use your AI tool to:

  • Get answers from your Membrain data without manually searching through records.
  • Analyze sales data and surface insights from your pipeline and accounts.
  • Ask questions about deals, customers, and sales activity using natural language.
  • Work with Membrain data alongside other information in your AI workflow.

Before you start

You’ll need:

  1. Access to the Insight Engine module - Basic Tier is available to everyone
  2. The appropriate MCP Permissions for your Membrain user
  3. An AI tool that supports custom MCP connectors - Create a connector for Membrain's MCP (admin step)
  4. Your Membrain MCP connection details - Connect via Oauth or Authentation Token.
Once connected, your AI tool accesses Membrain using your own Membrain identity and permissions.
Connecting an external AI tool does not give it access to information or actions that you wouldn't normally have access to in Membrain.

1. Access to the Insight Engine

By default, the Insight Engine is available to all our Membrain customers. That gives you access to a broad set of AI features as well as:

  • 500 AI credits per instance and month,

  • Membrain MCP access and,

  • up to 100 LLM calls for your AItools per instance and hour.

Additional Insight Engine capabilities require an upgrade.

2. Get the right MCP Permissions

Your Membrain administrator needs to grant you the appropriate MCP Permissions at the relevant levels.

These permissions determine what the MCP connection can access and do in Membrain.

Because MCP accesses Membrain as your user, it uses the permissions you already have in Membrain. In other words, connecting an AI tool doesn’t give you access to anything you wouldn’t be able to access in Membrain itself.

How MCP permissions work

Your administrator determines what you can do through MCP by configuring your MCP Permissions, based on what is most appropriate for your role.

There are two permission settings:

  • Read Access — allows you to access information from Membrain through MCP or the AI Assistant.

  • Write Access — allows you to make changes in Membrain through MCP or the AI Assistant.

The MCP connection acts as you. So, for example, if your Membrain user can only access certain information or perform certain actions, the MCP connection is subject to those same permissions.

3. Connecting your AI Tool

Connecting Claude Using OAuth

Before getting started, we recommend signing in to the Membrain account you want to connect, in the same browser. Then go into your Claude account and follow the steps below.

  1. Go to your personal Settings and find Connectors.

  2. Choose the option to add a Custom Connector.

  3. Enter your Membrain MCP Link using the following format: https://{YOUR_COMPANY}.membrain.com/MCP/

  4. Press Add and then proceed with the connection.

  5. Claude will automatically detect the Membrain MCP endpoint and direct you to a Membrain-hosted Grant Access page. Review the request and click Grant Access to approve the connection.
You need to be an administrator to be able to perform the setup in Claude for most Claude accounts.

When you're done your other Membrain users are ready to go and can use the connector directly, provided they have the right MCP permissions in Permission Groups from Membrain.

Connecting Other AI Tools

Other AI tools that support custom MCP connectors may require each individual user to provide their MCP Link or Authentication Token.

  1. Go to My Settings > Integrations and scroll down until you see MCP.

  2. Once you have these details, open the Settings in your AI tool and find where custom MCP connectors can be added.

  3. Paste your Membrain MCP link and the relevant Authentication Token, if your AI tool requires it.

Note: AI tools and their setup options change frequently, so always refer to the documentation for your chosen tool for the latest instructions.

Your MCP Link with Authentication Token are user-specific because the connection accesses Membrain as you. Keep your Authentication Token secure. Treat it like a credential and don't share it with other users.
